This book leaves most comics and shounen manga in the dust when it comes to realistic depiction of people - Alan Moore's writing combined with the Ian Gibson art droid's panels make a subversive and accessible mix. It got further than Firefly, and I am happy with what there is. It's a pity that Halo Jones never got continued, because there was a grand story just beginning to hit its stride. While the raw emotional power is in Book Three, the really interesting worldbuilding and character setup is missed out on. I only later managed to get my hands on the full story. Science Fiction has no shortage of powerful female protagonists, but it has very few everywomen. I kept the comic for years, as it slowly disintegrated.īooks influence your outlook on life, and I know now this was one of the big influencers on mine. Relativistic combat, religion, racism, veteran PTSD issues, the whole morality of war, sexism in combat (in the 50th century, it's unusual for men to be soldiers), toxic relationships, atrocities, toxic masculinity (the genetically-engineered male soldiers are literal Rambo parodies). You can tell I never bothered with the Young Adult section and Johnny McHiddenSuperPowers struggling to ask out Lacy Sweety while battling cream-puff bad guys. Seriously, what comic, even today, has a heroine that washes out of the military and cuts off her hair with a dull knife? Let alone visibly aging as the series progresses. Sheila Atim, in particular, does an excellent job of voicing Halo herself as she grows from being a naive teen into a cynical thirtysomething. There is also a bizarre error here in which one character, Lux Roth Chop, who is clearly supposed to be a child in the story is voiced by a grownup actor.īut, generally this is a first-class production which generally follows the original version very closely. Few stories from the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, 2000AD, are remembered with such affection as Alan Moore and Ian Gibson’s mid-80s classic, The Ballad of Halo Jones.
